The central pier is two tonnes of steel reinforced concrete. Stainless steel bolts show at the top. The floor is a separate slab, so as not to transmit seasonal movement or foot-fall. The pillar is straight and square, and aligned astronomical north-south, to the nearest millimetre.
Note that the slab has twelve sides. Even the inner gap has twelve sides. Why ? See below.
