Pencil nebula, a part of the Vela supernova remnant. Red: SII 9hrs, Green: H-alpha 9hrs; Blue: OIII 7hrs. See the yellow, reptilian face of a fire-breathing draon, facing left, immediately above the brightest, part of the bright blue-white pencil. The dragon is composed of multiple fine, detailed, interwoven shock fronts.. The top and bottom thirds of the image show diffuse material strong in H-alpha. Embedded in this diffuse material at top right is a ball of shocked material reminiscent of Escher's "Rind". This image was taken under a waxing gibbous moon.
North on left. Approx 30'arc wide. Aspen 16M on 20" PlaneWave.
